Culina Group is backing a formal petition launched by The Grocer (magazine) that asks ministers to reconsider subsidising food waste distribution to get more surplus food to charity.
Currently, it can cost up to £150 per tonne to separate, store and transport edible surplus food to charity. If this cost were reimbursed far more of the 270,000 tonnes of edible surplus in the system would go to people who need it. For only £10-15m per year, 100,000 tonnes of food could be donated.
A team of cyclists from Culina Group including Mike Roberts, Tony Kay, Paul Giddings, Carl Tolley, Daniel Muller, Paul Jacobs, Wojceich Jastrzebski and Paul Barnes recently took part in a charity cycle ride in support of MacMillan Cancer Support. The event started at Hoddesdon on Sunday 4th September where the team received a very warm welcome and a fine send off from the staff. The cyclists set off from Hoddesdon at midday arriving at Haverhill later in the day.
